RENEW YOUR ESTA APPLICATION
Even if you have successfully completed your first ESTA application, this authorization is only valid for two years. Once this period has elapsed, you’ll need to apply again for a new stay in the USA. Renewing your ESTA simply means making a new application. This is possible even if your first document has not yet expired. So prepare yourself for a feeling of déjà-vu, and get back online!
STEPS TO RENEW ESTA
The two-year validity of the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is strict: the American authorities will not grant you another day. Never take the risk of finding yourself in the United States with an out-of-date document. There’s only one solution: renew your ESTA application online.
This renewal involves nothing more than filling in the fields on the form again. You can’t go back to your previous ESTA and click on a “renew application” button, for example. Avoid copying and pasting your original form: you might forget some of the changes that have taken place in the meantime. What’s more, the reasons for your stay may be different, as may your state of health.
And don’t expect to be exempt from processing fees either: every application requires payment, as your file is reviewed in its entirety.
You can renew your official ESTA without waiting for the 2-year validity period to expire. This is sometimes essential if some of the information you provide is no longer up-to-date: passport number, address, criminal record, etc.
A FIRST ESTA DOES NOT GUARANTEE A SECOND!
Please don’t assume that once an application has been accepted, it will automatically be accepted again. The American authorities make no link between two applications, and a single change since your previous ESTA may be enough to result in a refusal if it no longer complies with the rules for obtaining it.
Keep in mind all the conditions associated with the Visa Waiver Program (VWP):
- It covers nationals from 38 member countries, but excludes those with dual nationality from Iraq, Iran, Syria and Sudan;
- Stays in the United States must not exceed 90 days;
- Their purpose must be tourism, business or transit;
- Your passport must be valid ;
- You must answer the questionnaire satisfactorily.
If nothing has changed since your first request, it’s likely that the second will also be successful, but don’t let that put you off.
