DOES THE ESTA HAVE TO BE PRINTED TO BE VALID?

This question crosses many minds when receiving an ESTA authorization for travel to the United States. The process is carried out online, and the document is received in digital format. So what’s the next step: do you have to print it out and present it to the authorities as soon as your plane takes off? Or can you do without any written proof? As a reminder, the ESTA is only available to nationals of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program. Anyone else planning to travel to the United States will need to obtain one of dozens of visas, depending on the purpose of their stay.

PRINTING THE ESTA IS NOT MANDATORY

When you apply to enter the USA using an official ESTA form, everything that happens afterwards is computerized: processing the information you’ve entered, requesting an ESTA update, issuing an authorization or refusal, and so on. For their part, the American authorities can find out your status at any time, without needing to see your authorization on paper.

You don’t need to print out your ESTA, as it’s relatively easy to retrieve your authorization electronically. When you arrive in the U.S., your passport will be checked and used as an identifier, so that the authorities can access your file and confirm your permission to stay. In this case, you won’t need to show your ESTA.

Note: bear in mind that ESTA issuance is fast (less than 72 hours) but not automatic. If you’re planning to leave soon, make sure you apply in advance, so you don’t end up in a rush and make careless mistakes when filling in the fields on the online form.

KEEP A COPY OF THE DOCUMENT AS A PRECAUTION

It’s never a good idea to be prepared for every eventuality, and to adapt to pessimistic assumptions. Indeed, no computer system is infallible: problems or breakdowns can sometimes occur, delaying your entry into the USA via ESTA. To be prepared for any eventuality, it costs nothing to print out your document.

What’s more, if you’re traveling to the U.S. by boat, for example, it’s not certain that the company will have adequate electronic verification facilities. So make sure you keep a paper copy of your ESTA.

Not only can you check at any time how much time you have left before the expiration date (as a reminder, the authorization allows you to travel on American soil for a maximum of 90 days), but it will also serve as proof of the ESTA’s validity in the event of a new departure to the USA within the 2-year period granted.

At the same time, keep a memo with your reference number on a piece of paper or on your phone. This number will be sent to you at the same time as your ESTA. It will be invaluable in speeding up the control process in the event of a technical hardware failure.

In conclusion, you are free to print your ESTA authorization or not.
