ESTA: HOW LONG IS IT VALID?

As the United States is not part of the Schengen area, it is not possible to travel there without an ESTA authorization or a valid visa.

ESTA VALIDITY CONDITIONS

Before we talk about ESTA validity, it’s important to note that to be valid, this document must contain current and truthful information. If any of the information you have entered on the form has changed or needs updating, this will invalidate your authorization, for example: if you have moved to another country, if your state of health has changed, or if your home address is no longer up to date.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has set the validity of the official ESTA at two years. Since its creation in 2009, this travel authorization has enabled all travelers to visit the USA several times in the two years following the date of issue.

Please note : your passport number is linked to your ESTA authorization. If your passport number expires, your ESTA USA authorization will no longer be considered valid by the American authorities. If this is the case, you will need to obtain a new authorization associated with your new passport, which will renew your ESTA validity for a further two years.

LENGTH OF STAY AUTHORIZED BY ESTA

As explained above, the ESTA USA validity period is two years, but this should not be confused with the length of stay granted by the ESTA authorization. In fact, whether you’re traveling to the U.S. for business or pleasure, your trip will be limited to exactly 90 consecutive days. After this period, you must leave the U.S. territory, but this does not prevent you from returning as soon as you wish, as long as the ESTA USA validity period is still valid.

Here is the validity of the ESTA according to your type of travel:

Travelling by airValid for 2 years for stays of up to 90 days.
Travelling by seaValid for 2 years for stays of up to 90 days.
Travelling by landNo ESTA authorization is required.
Transiting the USAValid for 2 years, for as many transits as you wish.
Leaving the U.S. and re-entering the country As long as your ESTA is still valid, you don’t need to renew it.

When your ESTA expires, unlike some official documents, it will not be renewed automatically; you must apply for a new one online if you wish to return to the United States. To do this, simply visit the official U.S. customs website, or use the services of private companies specialized in administrative procedures, offering services not available on the U.S. website (simplified forms, online assistance, verification and correction of information, etc.).
